Humanoid Robots Enter the Warehouse: Automation That Walks Alongside Your Fleet

Amazon already runs more than 750,000 robots across its fulfillment centers, and it has recently added a new kind of machine to that fleet: a bipedal humanoid robot called Digit, able to move empty containers at roughly human pace. Automation that lived in research labs for years is now, quite literally, learning to walk through the warehouse. Here is what is driving the trend and why it matters to anyone managing logistics operations and vehicle fleets.

From the lab to the loading dock

For years, humanoid robots were trade-show promises. Today at least eight companies —among them Agility Robotics, Figure, Apptronik, 1X and Tesla— are building commercial models backed by hundreds of millions in funding. The most advanced in active operation is Agility’s Digit: 1.75 meters tall, 65 kilograms, and able to lift up to 16. Amazon is testing it for empty-tote recycling, one of the most repetitive jobs on the warehouse floor.

Cost per hour shifts the math

The real story is economics, not novelty. Agility projects a unit cost below US$250,000, which works out to roughly US$12.50 per hour if a robot logs more than 20,000 working hours —about five years on a two-shift schedule. Set against a labor cost north of US$30 per employee-hour once benefits are included, the numbers start to make sense for standardized tasks. Agility’s plant in Salem, Oregon, aims to build up to 10,000 units a year.

What it means for logistics in Latin America

Large-scale regional adoption will take time, but the direction is clear: distribution centers will blend people, mobile robots and, increasingly, humanoids. «What’s interesting about Digit is that, because of its bipedal nature, it can fit in spaces a little bit differently,» says Amazon’s Emily Vetterick. For fleet managers, the challenge will be coordinating these physical assets —vehicles, robots and people— under a single layer of data and traceability.
