An independent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute (VTTI) tested an AI-powered dashcam system built by startup Nauto, and the results confirm that AI-based driver monitoring is maturing fast: under controlled, repeatable conditions, the system reached up to 100% detection accuracy on several risky behaviors.

Track testing, not just a lab demo

VTTI ran the tests on Virginia Smart Roads, replicating scenarios from a prior 2023 benchmark study: handheld phone calls, outgoing texts, discreet phone use, seatbelt compliance, rolling stops, and tailgating. In Class 8 tractor tests, the system detected 100% of handheld calls, outgoing texts, discreet smartphone use, and seatbelt violations; 95% of rolling stops; and tailgating detection improved from an initial 50% to 100% after a system adjustment. “This study allowed us to evaluate driver-monitoring technologies in a controlled, repeatable way, so we could clearly measure how the system responded,” said Susan Soccolich of VTTI.

From alert to correction, in seconds

Nauto says the system combines more than ten distraction and drowsiness indicators to reach alert accuracy above 90%, aiming specifically to issue warnings while the driver still has time to react — a three-to-four-second window. “One of our primary goals is to issue alerts only when corrective action is still possible,” said Nauto CEO Stefan Heck. MIT researcher Bryan Reimer added that “the real art lies in the support systems that shape driver behavior.”

What it means for fleet management

A 2017 Insurance Institute for Highway Safety report estimated that forward collision warning combined with automatic emergency braking could have prevented nearly a million rear-end crashes and more than 400,000 injuries in the U.S. alone. For a fleet manager, the underlying message is clear: driver behavior data is just as valuable as vehicle location, and both become far more useful when combined in a single visibility platform instead of living in separate systems.

Unified fleet visibility — location, routes, and operational alerts in one place — is the foundation faster safety decisions are built on. Learn more at www.esencialgps.cl about how EsencialGPS helps fleet managers across Latin America get that real-time visibility.
