Epidermal Sensors: The Smart Clothing That Measures Blood Pressure Without Batteries

The line between clothing and medical devices is blurring fast. An international team has unveiled a system of epidermal biosensors linked by a “metamaterial” textile that measures blood pressure continuously and, remarkably, without batteries. A nearby smartphone handles both power and data. Published in Nature Electronics, the work points to a future where the garment you wear becomes a round-the-clock monitoring instrument.

How the metamaterial textile works

The system pairs a network of ultrathin sensors that adhere directly to the skin with a metamaterial fabric woven into the garment during manufacturing. That fabric behaves like a distributed antenna: a nearby smartphone delivers power wirelessly at 13.56 MHz and receives the biological signals over a separate 2.4 GHz channel engineered to minimize latency. The outcome, according to the authors, is “continuous, high-fidelity biosensing without the need for batteries,” removing the bulky cells that have long limited such devices.

What it measures and where it stands

In testing by researchers at the National University of Singapore, the University of Arizona and Tsinghua University, the system measured systolic blood pressure both at rest and during physical activity, holding a stable reading while the body was in motion. The authors note the architecture could be extended to other classes of epidermal sensors for different biomedical parameters. For now it is an experimental validation: there are no human clinical trials or regulatory approvals yet, so everyday use remains some way off.

Why it matters beyond health

The underlying idea reaches past medicine. It is about capturing data continuously, reliably and without the friction of recharging batteries, pushing the intelligence out to the surrounding environment, in this case the phone. That is the same principle driving the connected-sensor industry: accurate, real-time information to support better decisions. In logistics and asset management, that logic of measuring without interrupting the operation is exactly what makes it possible to anticipate failures, optimize routes and protect what is on the move.
